Back in the saddle again

I've been neglecting the blog, but there's been things going on. And rather than drag it out and ramble endlessly about different things at different times I'll just ramble about a lot of things all at once:

Injury recovery news

I was in a boot for three months due to a stress fracture. Two weeks before I got rid of the boot for good I started to gingerly jog for 30 seconds at a time to start to get back in running shape. The boot was officially booted on December 29. This past weekend I ran my first post-injury five miler. It was slower than I would have liked, but five miles is not insignificant to me considering a month ago I was happy to run for five minutes. I am well on track to run 10 miles on April 1.

Training news

To have a little flexibility I decided to finally construct my own training plan to work my way up to 10 miles. I've been taking a little from here and there and doing a little of this and that. One thing I ran across was a type of speed work where rather than sprint 400 meters six times or working up to 10 Yasso 800s you simply sprint for 15 seconds and then jog for 45 and repeat that for 2-3 miles or whatever. You run a mile easy to warm up and a mile easy to cool down and bam, you're done. I love this type of speed work! Three miles goes by like that (I just snapped my fingers).

Contest news

My friends over at runningshoes.com are holding a contest for people to win a pair of pretty sweet looking limited edition Mizuno Wave Rider 15s. All you have to do is leave a comment explaining why you love your running buddy. If you're a Wave Rider person you should definitely give it a shot. And if you're not a Wave Rider person you should still give it a shot because someone you know would love you for winning a pair for them.

Shoe news

Do you know what May 1 is? It's May Day, of course. All hail communism socialism international workers! But it's also the day Saucony releases the Kinvara 3. I am generally no big fan of shoe updates because I worry that a good thing may be lost forever (see: the wonderful Asics Gel-Cumulus 11 being replaced by the horrid Gel-Cumulus 12), and I am a big fan of the Kinvara 2's ability to be both a minimalist-ish and supportive shoe, but it looks like the Kinvara 3 is going to be a worthwhile update. I can't wait to find out.

So what have you been up to?

  1. Too funny that you posted about being gone for a while - I just posted the same thing two days ago and so did another blog that I read. Your recovery has been amazing to me - but then again you post injury runs are far quicker than even when I feel in great shape! The weather has been nice - but I have not been able to enjoy it with a run, have you?

  2. It's all relative, I guess. To you my recovery has been amazing. To me it's been agonizingly slow. I've been getting back at it for 6 weeks now and my speed and endurance is nowhere near where it was. That was especially true yesterday when I got a run in during the afternoon when it was in the low 60s and I struggled mightily through a lousy 3.5 miler.

  3. Your recovery and race plan are really impressive! With a much less serious injury and shorter layoff, I'm finding myself afraid to commit to anything longer than a 10K in the spring.

I remember you were thinking about a bunch of 10-milers...If Broad St. is one of them registration opens (and way well fill up) on the 15th. I'll probably skip it this year since I'd have to make the decision after only 1 or 2 runs.

    1. Thanks, Brian. I'll be in Frederick the day of the Broad St. Run doing a half marathon. And that's another thing. I wanted to do a bunch of new to me things too, yet this spring I have two 10 milers, a 7 miler, and a half marathon, all of which I've done at least twice each. Go figure. :-)

    2. Oh! -- I hadn't even noticed that they were the same day since I'd made the knee jerk (shinsplint jerk? wakka wakka wakka) decision to not run anything that long till Fall.

I've got 5, 8, and 10Ks on the plan again, only way to keep it fresh is how much to spend on trying new races or going back to old favorites.

    3. I'm kind of interested in the doing the new Sole of the City 10K on April 21. Which are you doing?
