It's on like, well, probably not like Donkey Kong or anything

I am happy to say the calf strain that kept me down for a while and kept me out of two races (one I just couldn't run and the other I was able to defer my register for until next year) is healed. I ran four 3-4 mile runs last week without any lingering issues, and yesterday I logged 5.3 miles without any. This is good news because yesterday's run was the first for Marine Corps Marathon training. I have run all of these runs considerably slower than I'm used to, but that's ok because I'm ramping up from getting over an injury, the weather has been difficult and it's not like I'm training to run a sub-3:30 marathon or anything.

I've also made a decision regarding the swag I "earned" for the Survivor Harbor 7, the race I was registered for but didn't run because of injury. I have a pair of SH7 socks and a SH7 t-shirt, neither of which indicate when the events they represent were held. They're basically socks and a t-shirt with a logo on it.

Here's the decision: I am going to wear this swag, even though I didn't technically earn the right by running the race. I have run the SH7 twice in the past and of the three t-shirts I have there's no way you can tell which was for which year by looking at them.

Get on my feet! And on my back!

The catch is that I won't wear the socks or the t-shirt until I'm able to run longer than 7 miles. I'm up to 5.3, and I should get up to 6 tomorrow, and this weekend's training calls for a one-hour long run, where I should get over the 7 mile hump.

Am I tempting fate? Taking a risk? Asking for trouble? Laughing in the face of danger? Probably. But you know what? That's just how I roll. I'm not called The Daredevil Kid for nothing, even if the next person who calls me that will be the first.

So it's on, gods of running. I'm freshly recovered from an (admittedly pretty minor) injury, I'm just starting to train for a marathon, and I'm planning to wear race swag for which I didn't earn the right. What you gonna do about it?

(Please no "I told you so's" when my first post after I wear the shirt or socks is inevitably about how I blew out my achilles tendon and won't be able to run for a year. Thank you.)

  1. You're not tempting the schwag fates at all. Seems fine to wear it if there's no date. You've run that race (multiple times) and that distance (probably more times than you can count).

This makes think I need to write a post about the very nice Philly Marathon shirt that I can never wear in public.

  2. Oh, I have a few running friends that I believe would vehemently disagree with your opinion that I'm not tempting fate with this decision. But I like your thinking better!

  3. I think your 7 miler should cover you :) Glad to see that you were able to recover though, that's always a bummer starting over.

  4. Just go and run the SH7 course by yourself and then the swag gods will be appeased ;) Good to hear that you are back pounding the pavement.
