There's always a time crunch for me to get my running in. Today I raced home from work, ran 5 miles around the neighborhood, took a shower, picked up my kids, went to little league, ate dinner, blah blah blah. Sometimes I get so lost in the routine that I never notice anything that's going on.
But then maybe because I was in such a hurry after my run I realized that I was taking a lot of junk off of me before I could get into the shower. So I decided to take an inventory of everything I ran with today and what it cost (to illustrate how "cheap" running is):
Under Armour Baseball Hall of Fame t-shirt - $22.50
Champion double-dry shorts - $14
Balega Hidden Comfort socks - $10
Saucony Pro-Grid Triumph 4 shoes - $120
Running hat - $22
Oakley Half Jacket sunglasses - $115
iRiver Clix (Gen 1) 2GB mp3 player - $115
Garmin Forerunner 305 (with heart rate monitor) - $200
RoadID Wrist ID Bracelet - $20
Total price paid for gear associated with 4/22 5 mile run - $638.50
Granted, the prices paid are not present values, nor can I say I haven't gotten my money's worth out of them or that they weren't good values, nor can I say that I can only use everything listed exclusively for running or that I bought them specifically for running, but wow, right?
Good thing that I either live in a decent neighborhood, or that muggers don't understand the value of what's on my person, or that everything is covered in my sweat.
I should probably be thankful for the small favor of sweat glands.

Pricing my running person

Ok, you really are running around with tons of running money on you. I figured my normal weather running gear and stuff up and I'm at $662. if it's nice out and I don't have to layer up. If I put on my Under Armor jacket, well that really jumps it up there. Funny thing, I had someone try to break into my car a while back and I thought, no big deal, all they would get is my gym bag. If I added all that I throw in there up it'd probably be like this:
She Beast bike shorts: $50
Nike tank: $25
Nike workout pants: $36
Nike long sleeve top: $36
Asics shoes: $95
Garmin footpod: $30
iPod shuffle: $80
Sports Bra: $15
Extra panties: $5
Climbing harness: $25
Climbing shoes: $30
Misc. items like padlock, hemp chapstick, extra earbuds and of course the bag itself.
So, when I though it would be no big deal I would have been replacing more than $427 worth of stuff. Damn being fit is expensive but I really still think we're worth it.
And I guess I should think about getting a road ID since if I got lost or hurt on a run they'd have to take the long way of figuring out who I was, whatever that way is.
Thanks for sharing and the short guilt trip you sent me on. (it was very short, I'm selfish what can I say)
Oh! I forgot my Nike compression shorts, which were $25. So the amended grand total would be $663.50. Of course, if someone wanted to steal my crusty drawers then more power to them.
We don't realize just how much $$$ we put into whatever we're into...
Dang you're worth your weight in gold! :-)
